Sister Sparrow & the Dirty Birds

When: Fri., May 10, 9 p.m. 2013

Vocal dynamo Arleigh Kincheloe leads Brooklyn eight-piece Sister Sparrow & the Dirty Birds' soulful ventures, backed by harmonica-playing brother Jackson, drummer cousin Bram and a gaggle of friends that flesh out the horn and rhythm sections. She sashays seductively on retro-hued pop tunes and unleashes a bluesy wail on grittier numbers. Though Jackson sometimes borrows too liberally from John Popper's vibe, the band largely succeeds on an eclectic assortment of vintage-flavored rock, whether spiked with reggae guitar chop, filled by a frenzy of ska-style horns or propelled by R&B grooves. —Spencer Griffith
