SIR WALTER MILER

MEREDITH COLLEGE TRACK, RALEIGH | FRIDAY, AUG. 7

What can you do in four minutes? Listen to a pop song? Wait for the water to filter through your pour-over? Microwave a meal? At the annual Sir Walter Miler, a field of 30 national and local runners will try to pack 5,280 feet into 240 seconds or less. Cory Leslie, the fastest among them, is only about 10 seconds off the world-record pace, and he currently holds North Carolina's best time at just under 3 minutes and 57 seconds. Watch as these elites compete for the quickest sprints, but don't feel excluded if your legs don't work like that. Parties before and after at the nearby Raleigh Brewing Company offer a beer just for the occasion, plus food trucks. And back at the track, right before the really fast folks get moving, area running stores and run clubs race it out for top times of their own. The Triangle's running community has started to sprawl in recent years, and this exciting night is a testimony to the action. 8:30 p.m., free, 3800 Hillsborough St., Raleigh, 919-760-8600, www.sirwaltermiler.com.Grayson Haver Currin
