Sinner's Side Show

When: Sun., April 1, 7 p.m. 2012

If steampunk dated psychobilly, they would go to the Sinner's Side Show. Part carnival, part vaudeville, the celebration has chosen a perfect headliner in Hellblinki, from the Western North Carolina town of Candler. This cabaret noir crew has shrunk from sextet to trio over the years, but they still survey a vibrant blend of Weimar swing, gypsy shamble and drunken rag-blues slink. Frontman Andrew Benjamin has a gritty Tom Waits growl; Valerie Meiss offers a cool, smoky counterpoint. Asheville's Go Devils race psychobilly down back-road straightaways, surfing asphalt over waves of reverb spiked with punky verve. Visual spice is added by burlesque performers including Rachel Riot and Cherry Von Bomb, plus comedians including medicine man Doc Volz, steampunk's answer to Mr. Science. —Chris Parker
