Sinkane, Shirlette Ammons

When: Sat., June 6, 9 p.m. 2015

Ahmed Gallab, or Sinkane, taps broad “world music” influences to make his own distinctively funky stuff. Over five studio records, he’s incorporated bits of bossa nova, psych rock, R&B, kraut and reggae into increasingly slick pop songs. Last year, he served as musical director for ATOMIC BOMB! The Music of William Onyeabor, guiding luminaries like David Byrne and Dev Hynes through performances of material by the Nigerian synth-pop mystery man. With Sudanese roots and a playful disregard for genre boundaries, Sinkane seems Onyeabor’s rightful (and much more available) heir to an omnivorous idea of Afropop. —Jeff Klingman
