Sinjin Hawke

When: Fri., Aug. 31, 10 p.m. 2012

A Montreal expatriate living in Barcelona, Sinjin Hawke is signed to the Belgium label Pelican Fly. His R&B remixes for Ciara, The-Dream, Brandy and Beyoncé mostly outperform the originals, and Hawke's deep-trap compositions are more tailored for planetariums than for average-sized dance floors—but who's looking for stars? What you should be looking for at this month's Discovery party are Hawke's shifts between trippy bass workouts and soul textures. Mostly, his tastes are phantasms of unlimited musical influences, but his amendments make every beat better. There's evidence of this on The Lights EP, but Hawke puts in the most work on his popular RinseFM mix. If we're lucky, we'll get a Discovery party mix."We are the only Southeast date on his tour and really the smallest city to get a shot," says Discovery organizer Edwin Whitted, "so this is a big deal for Raleigh." —Eric Tullis
