Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars, Diali Cissokho & Kaira Ba

When: Thu., May 1, 8 p.m. 2014

They were refugees of Sierra Leone's brutal 12-year civil war, and many have stories like Alhaji Jeffrey Kamara, or Black Nature. He saw his father killed, then endured a childhood as a forced solider before escaping. The All-Stars were discovered playing in a refugee camp by two filmmakers; the 2005 documentary bearing their name brought international fame. With the civil war long-since over, they've returned to their homeland and now spread their musical message of hope with a light-footed mix of Afrobeat shimmy and reggae bounce. "Jamaican reggae has more of the bass while we have more of the guitar," Black Nature says. They're supporting their bright, life-affirming fourth album, Libation. —Chris Parker
