Shuggie Otis, Greg Humphreys Electric Trio

When: Sat., Aug. 1, 8:30 p.m. 2015

Shuggie Otis was the shit, and then he was nothing. Son of noted bandleader Johnny Otis, Shuggie took to guitar at 11. By 15, he'd put out an album with Al Kooper before making his solo debut a year later. At 21, Otis released his iconic, much-sampled third album, Inspiration Information. He produced and played every instrument, working to create a borderless blend of jazz, blues, soul, funk, psych and rock. Some call it a masterpiece, so, of course, Epic Records dropped him a year later. An extraordinary musician, Otis had sideman offers from the Stones, David Bowie and Blood, Sweat & Tears, but he passed on the role of second fiddle. Still, nobody gave him an album deal with creative control, so Otis didn't release anything for almost 40 years. Inspiration Information reemerged in 2013, with a second album culled from extensive home recordings, Wings of Love, in tow. Otis has returned to the road. Greg Humphreys, the longtime area soulman and bandleader who now lives in New York, returns with his Electric Trio to open. 8:30 p.m., $22.50-$27, 126 E. Cabarrus St., Raleigh,
