Shrek | Memorial Auditorium | Stage | Indy Week

When: Nov. 27-Dec. 2 2012

I'm more fascinated by the rapidity of the franchising of this musical, which is based on DreamWorks' preternaturally-extended series of CGI animated films, than by the actual story line. The initial $24 million Broadway production scored eight Tony nominations (and one win) and featured such pros as Brian d'Arcy James, Sutton Foster and Christopher Sieber, but only ran for a little over a year. Nonetheless, it spawned multiple U.S. tours, along with productions in Asia, Poland, Italy, Brazil and elsewhere (coming soon: Australia!). That is some impressive production model. Featuring almost as much green on stage as Wicked, it's the story your kids know already about the Ogre, the Donkey and the displaced fairy tale creatures. See how it translates to live action at this N.C. Theatre production, which runs through Dec. 2. Show times are at 7:30 p.m. —Zack Smith

Price: $21-76
