She Stoops to Conquer

When: Oct. 26-Nov. 17 2012

To say the least, things have changed since 1773. Take the following character, for instance: A twentysomething son of wealth, cripplingly shy around girls of his social station but very forward with women from the lower echelons. Today, he'd easily serve as the unsavory central character in a twisted tale of sexual harassment—or worse. But in 18th-century England, Charles Marlow winds up as something of a hero in Oliver Goldsmith's comedy of mistaken identities, marriage and class. The heroine in the story is Kate Hardcastle, the young woman who recognizes Charles' character flaw and still deigns to the titular stooping. Tony Lea directs a cast including Amelia Sciandra, Brian Fisher, Marcia Edmundson and Thomas Porter. Friday's opening show is at 8 p.m.; performances continue Wednesdays–Thursdays at 7:30 p.m., Fridays–Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. through Nov. 17. Tickets run $14–$21, with a special rate of $10 for all seats on Halloween. —Byron Woods
