Shaun of the Dead

When: Wed., March 16, 8 p.m. 2011

Before you go see the new sci-fi comedy Paul in theaters, why not check out its unofficial predecessor, which taught us new uses for a cricket bat and the 1989 Batman soundtrack. Taking off from their British TV series Spaced (a must-see on DVD), Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and co-writer/ director Edgar Wright spun a comedy that turns the concept of a zombie apocalypse on its (rotted) head while still working as an increasingly intense horror film in its own right. The satirical look at how zombified life isn't much different from going through the emotions of slackerdom is funny enough, but Wright's hyperkinetic visual style (later on display with Pegg and Frost in Hot Fuzz and with Michael Cera in last year's underrated Scott Pilgrim) gives the material the cinematic quality of the very films it parodies. Pegg and Frost team up again as co-stars and co-writers on Paul, which promises to do for science fiction films what Shaun did for zombies ...which is a very good thing. —Zack Smith
