Seun Kuti & Egypt 80

When: Thu., April 5, 8 p.m. 2012

In music, there are perhaps no two heavier burdens than leading a revival and being the offspring of a pioneer. Seun Kuti, the youngest son of Afrobeat mastermind Fela Kuti, does both: Fronting the bulk of his father's band, Seun takes charge of the restless horns and the skittering rhythms, giving an old form the energy of youth and erudition earned by being there when the stuff was first developed. Last year's From Africa with Fury: Rise was recorded—of all places and with of all people—in Rio de Janeiro by the team of Brian Eno and John Reynolds. It reinvigorates not only the father's eternal swing and enthusiasm but also his political pleas, giving revolutionary music one more deserved turn. Please dance. —Grayson Currin
