Screaming Females, Pujol

When: Sun., Nov. 2, 9 p.m. 2014

Much ado has been made of Screaming Females frontwoman Marissa Paternoster, and deservedly so. She leads the New Jersey trio with a dynamic approach to both her guitar and her voice. Music critic Nitsuh Abebe nailed it when he wrote that her singing sounds “as if she’s just enjoying all hell out of the sounds she can make.” That description actually applies to every angle of this band, which plays with the urgency of punk and the dexterity of ’70s guitar shredders. The hour-long setlist of this year’s Steve Albini-recorded Live at the Hideout spans the band’s decade-long career but avoids rote re-creation for a more vibrant, volatile approach. —Bryan C. Reed
