Screaming Females, Pink Flag, Last Year's Men

When: Mon., June 14, 9:30 p.m. 2010

Petite, mop-topped front woman Marissa Paternoster is the whirling dervish at the eye of Screaming Females' maelstrom. When not mustering a full-bodied throb like Dinosaur Jr. mixed with Blue Cheer, she unleashes serrated metallic leads that could shred Optimus Prime. Her vocals, too, pass from an arch, punky speak-croon into shrieking screamo howls, suggesting spiritual kinship with Kat Bjelland. Paternoster's backed by a particularly muscular rhythm section, whose steely, hard-edged churn provides a firm foundation for her excursions. Locals Pink Flag make a nice aperitif with jagged, hook-lined punk bluster possessing alluring wiggle and dynamics to separate from a full-throated rrriot. Also, new Churchkey Records signees Last Year's Men. —Chris Parker
