Screaming Females, Downtown Boys, Midnight Plus One

When: Mon., March 9, 9 p.m. 2015

Skeptics and fans of New Jersey's Screaming Females tend to talk about the trio with vaguely veiled sexism. Even the doubters declaim that frontwoman Marissa Paternoster is a brilliant guitarist, a technician who plays with the kind of gusto and swagger you might expect from some burly dude counterpart. But what they don't talk about, because they're too busy being stunned by her six strings, is her increasingly accomplished songwriting. The great new 10-song set, Rose Mountain, should help remedy that. Sure, there are straight-arrow wallops with big solos, like opener "Empty Head" and closer "Criminal Image," but Paternoster has added finesse and advanced form to her toolkit. "Hopeless," for instance, begins as a tongue-in-cheek, weepy ballad, where wounded love causes a murmur, then a jangle and then, at last, a fuck-off barnburner. "Wishing Well" is a galloping beauty, while "It's Not Fair" is an italicized race through grunge revivalism. All of these songs eventually spin back to Paternoster's guitar work, but there's more to be heard here than exclamations of, "Wow, bro, she can play." With Providence's fun and flailing Downtown Boys and Carrboro's Midnight Plus One. 9 p.m., $10, 117 W. Main St., Durham, 919.667-1100, Haver Currin
