Say Anything, Modern Baseball, Cymbals Eat Guitars, Hard Girls

When: Thu., July 2, 7:30 p.m. 2015

Save for the string quartet that replaces layers of roaring guitars, Hebrews sounds like a Say Anything record, no matter how much it wants to be different. Max Bemis still rants and raves over wrought punk-pop numbers that bridge screamo and show tunes. This tour finds Say Anything performing its songs with a live string quartet and a full-stacked band. And despite his assertion on “Judas Decapitation” that “American indie rock is a game of pricks,” Bemis picked two good ones as tour openers: hyper-lyrical Pennsylvania quartet Modern Baseball, which draws from the same alcohol-and-irony well as The Weakerthans, and New Jersey foursome Cymbals Eat Guitars, which finds its place in the quadrant of Built to Spill and The Wrens. —Patrick Wall
