Sarah Sharma

When: Fri., Feb. 28, 7 p.m. 2014

Do you ever feel as if life is accelerating, speeding away from you, out of control? Do you wish for a pause button so you can catch up? It's hard to imagine any sentient being in our hectic modern world answering "no." For this universal problem, Sarah Sharma has answers. Sharma, associate professor of media and technology studies at UNC-Chapel Hill, is the author of In the Meantime: Temporality and Cultural Politics, which recently came out on Duke University Press. She studies people whose jobs or passions are intimately linked to time, from taxi drivers and business class frequent-flyers to slow foodies. She uses this ethnographic research to explore how different people have different experiences of time, making the case that both speedy and slothful temporal frames are social control mechanisms that support contemporary capitalism. Thankfully, Sharma will be discussing rather than reading directly from this heady-sounding tome. Don't be late.Brian Howe
