Sails, Spars, Stormy Weather and Settling Seas | The Carrack Modern Art | Arts | Indy Week

Sails, Spars, Stormy Weather and Settling Seas

When: Fri., Aug. 31, 7-10 p.m. 2012

The Carrack gives artists the opportunity to completely transform its gallery space. Artist Melissa Stanfield Walker of Randleman, N.C., is the latest to take advantage of that permission, branching out into installation after making a name for herself with colorful landscape paintings and pastels and abstract collage and journaling. Yet her work in collage and altered books has hinted at an interest in pushing its two-dimensional limit. In this show, she and her sculptor husband, Ed, convert the Carrack into their Neuse River marina, constructing sails and incorporating video and sound. It's an interesting chance to see an established artist trying something new. The exhibit continues through Sept 6. —Chris Vitiello
