Russian Tsarlag, Dan Talbot, Secret Boyfriend, Jeremy Harris, Viszk

When: Fri., Nov. 21, 9:30 p.m. 2014

Providence’s Russian Tsarlag is a true believer in distorted songs. While the muted maneuvers of chillwave have either matured or faded altogether, along with its more warped antecedents, Russian Tsarlag has only refined his unrefined approach, in which songs bend, flicker and pop beneath tape hiss and webs of effects. He’s been at this idea for nearly a decade, and his most recent releases are some of his best. In particular, last year’s Gagged in Boonesville suggests hearing Top 40 played by the dying speakers of a carnival fun house, while you’re fading from an extreme cotton candy sugar high. Opener Dan Talbot turns similar tricks, though he leans more on a collage-like process. Secret Boyfriend, Jeremy Harris and Viszk join this excellent bill. —Grayson Haver Currin
