Rummage | Flanders Gallery | Arts | Indy Week

When: May 2-30 2014

Land. Sky. House. These are the components of every preschooler's drawing and tourist's vacation photo as well as the focal points of a master landscape painting. Such ubiquitous forms are a seemingly infinite source of pictorial and aesthetic relevance. Damian Stamer is living proof of a vital contemporary practice that is solidly based in the imaging of buildings and place. Stamer paints nearly monochromatic meditations on rural North Carolina that incorporate distressed surfaces and blurred passages, riffing on the photographic, memory and the desire for a place that may be reachable only through art. The show runs through the end of May. Also on view: Home is Where the Heart Is, painted and collaged photos by Tommy Taylor. —Amy White
