RONALD K. BROWN/EVIDENCE DANCE COMPANY + JASON MORAN & THE BANDWAGON

REYNOLDS INDUSTRIES THEATER, DURHAM

FRIDAY, FEB. 20–SATURDAY, FEB. 21

MacArthur Fellow Jason Moran, a jazz composer and pianist, has sought out unlikely collaborations with his group, The Bandwagon—catch the Vimeo clip of their 2013 sessions with San Francisco's FTC Skateboarding for a good example. Though choreographer Ronald K. Brown set The Subtle One, which premiered in New York last summer, to music from Moran's album, Ten, these are the first performances where Moran will provide live accompaniment. Brown, a longtime American Dance Festival all-star, pursues the spiritual in expressive works that fuse African and modern dance. According to the choreographer, the title is another name for God in Islam: "the one who whispers things into existence." Critics in New York and Boston have praised the work as "an expression of praise" and "full of lyrical swoops and arms that always seem to be reaching to the beyond." 8 p.m., $10–$42, 125 Science Dr., Durham, 919-684-4444, www.dukeperformances.duke.edu. —Byron Woods
