Rogue Wave, Midlake, Peter Wolf Crier

When: Sat., Oct. 2, 8:30 p.m. 2010

Rogue Wave's come a long way since their spunky lo-fi 2003 debut, Out of the Shadows—not always for the best, mind you. While there's still plenty of craft and hooks, the gradual increase in synthetic elements and overwrought production has continually sapped the music's charms. Rogue's second major-label effort, March's Permalight, feels as much like art as pop—commensurately sterile and distant, if still pretty. Midlake's made albums informed by ramshackle folk-psych recalling Grandaddy, Neutral Milk Hotel and dreamy '70s rock. Their third, The Courage of Others, dips into prog-folk, cadging the arty medieval elegance of '70s British folkies Renaissance and Pentangle. Peter Wolf Crier opens. —Chris Parker
