Rodgers and Hammerstein's The King and I

When: June 6-11 2017

This 1951 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical has long been Exhibit A in the case against several unsavory practices in midcentury popular entertainment, including orientalism, yellowface, and that whole colonialist, cultural imperialism thing. So any present-day revival is going to be dicey at best. But director Bartlett Sher successfully steered protagonist Anna Leonowens's steamship—and a 2016 revival that won four Tony Awards—through turbulent cultural waters by focusing more on historical accuracy than Broadway spectacle. In Sher's attempts to find "something truthful about the inner life of the people," The New York Times noted, "every member of these crowds is an individual ... no one is merely a dancer, an extra or an archetype."
