Rock for Roe: MC Taylor and Friends, Loamlands

When: Sun., Jan. 18, 8 p.m. 2015

What kind of disenfranchising or discriminatory stunts can the North Carolina General Assembly, which convenes bright and early in Raleigh on Wednesday, pull in their first half-week back at work? In the last two years, there's seemed little limit to the regressive imagination of our elected leaders, but at least their choices have mobilized masses in events like Moral Monday or, on a much smaller scale, Rock for Roe. Launched three years ago by pro-choice policy champion NARAL NC, Rock for Roe presented Mountain Goats mainstay John Darnielle solo for its first two annual shows. He auctioned off song requests and, pulling double duty as a NARAL NC board member, spoke about wicked Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers laws and rallied those singing along to take their enthusiasm to and beyond the polls. Darnielle takes the year off, passing the microphone to Merge labelmate and Hiss Golden Messenger leader Mike Taylor. Hiss Golden Messenger albums tend to involve roving troves of collaborators, so expect much the same from this set billed with "& Friends." Loamlands, led by Pinhook owner and essential facilitator for area activism Kym Register, serve as apt openers. 8 p.m., $15, 117 W. Main St., Durham, 919-667-1100, —Grayson Haver Currin
