Rochelle Hurt and Kate Sweeney

When: Tue., March 18, 7 p.m. 2014

Two MFA graduates from UNC-Wilmington, a nonfiction writer and a poet, celebrate the publication of their first books by sharing a reading. Kate Sweeney is the author of American Afterlife: Encounters in the Customs of Mourning, a brisk and approachable investigation of how Americans both historical and contemporary deal with mortality. Rochelle Hurt is the author of The Rusted City, a volume of quietly intense prose poems, focused around the character of "the smallest sister," which was compared to Baudelaire by someone who knows her way around the form, Saturnalia Book Prize-winner Sabrina Orah Mark. A Q&A with both writers follows the readings. —Brian Howe
