ROBERT SHULTS: THE SUPERLATIVE LIGHT LAUNCH PARTY | FRIDAY, OCT. 31, HILLSBOROUGH

DAYLIGHT PROJECT SPACE—Underneath the University of Texas lurks one of the most powerful lasers in the world. Though it's a research device, not a death ray, Robert Shults recasts it as the stuff of B-movies in the stark, dramatic black-and-white photos that appear in his monograph The Superlative Light, new from Hillsborough's Daylight Books. White-coated technicians become diabolical mad scientists through Shults' awestruck lens. Further mingling fiction and documentary, the book includes a science-fiction story inspired by the photos and a real science essay about the laser. At this Halloween launch party, there will be refreshments, live music and a prize drawing for the best futuristic costume. The exhibit, which runs through Nov. 24, is part of the Click! Triangle Photography Festival. 6 p.m., free, 121 W. Margaret Lane, 917-740-0460, www.daylightbooks.org. —Brian Howe
