ROBERT RANDOLPH

& THE FAMILY BANDLINCOLN THEATRE, RALEIGH | SUNDAY, JUNE 7

Maybe Robert Randolph cashed in too hard, too fast. After he rose as the star of the squealing sacred steel at the turn of the millennium, he entered a decade-plus of tireless touring. The schedule seemed to wear the energetic virtuoso and his Family Band thin. On stage, they started to roll through the motions. During the last several years, though, they've regained some of that early joyful noise. 2013's Lickety Split offered a cauldron of blues, funk and rock hybrids, marked by the enthusiasm that first established Randolph's name as a Hendrix-like showstopper. Last month, Randolph released his long-awaited follow-up with The Word, the supergroup that made him famous by flanking him with John Medeski and the North Mississippi Allstars. While Randolph seems to have at last overcome his historical struggle in translating his incendiary stage show to tape, his sets remain a sight to behold, particularly for a first-time witness. Swampy Raleigh rockers Jack The Radio open. 8 p.m., $23.50–$28, 126 E. Cabarrus St., Raleigh, 919-821-4111, www.lincolntheatre.org.Spencer Griffith
