Robert Earl Keen, Ruston Kelly

When: Tue., July 14, 8 p.m. 2015

Robert Earl Keen didn’t enjoy his friend Lyle Lovett’s success or stylistic wanderlust. Keen’s Texas country has run, instead, from jock-ular redneck paeans like “Merry Christmas From the Family” to downbeat slices-of-life like “Out Here in the Middle,” which outdoes the beer-and-a-pickup-on-a-Saturday-night set for authenticity. It’s well written, if more conventional and less raw than, say, Ray Wylie Hubbard. He seemed freed from preconceptions on last year’s Happy Prisoner: The Bluegrass Sessions. Keen channels hootenanny frivolity on “1952 Vincent Black Lightning” and “This World Is Not My Home,” as the fun the band seemed to have in the studio translated to the songs themselves. —Chris Parker
