Rick Bragg

When: Fri., Dec. 12, 7 p.m. 2014

If you're going to tell the extremely Southern tale of Jerry Lee Lewis, a story rife with drugs, child brides, car crashes and, oh yeah, brilliant soul-shaking rock 'n' roll, you need someone from the same earth. Rick Bragg, as anyone who's read All Over But the Shoutin' knows, is as Southern as they come. He spent two years interviewing Lewis about topics ranging from his rivalry with Elvis to shooting up his office while drunk and bored, resulting in the authorized biography Jerry Lee Lewis: His Own Story. The book avoids the "authorized" pap trap and, while always understanding of Lewis' motivations, doesn't skirt the darker corners of his life. Bragg's journalism for papers such as The New York Times made him a Pulitzer winner and he's authored several best-sellers. The man can flat-out write, but he tells a story like the rightful inheritor of a line of hardscrabble yarn-spinners. Hear for yourself when he speaks before his book-signing. Bragg also appears at the Regulator on Friday and McIntyre's on Saturday; see page 48 for details. 7:30 p.m., signing-line ticket with purchase of the book, 3522 Wade Ave., 919-828-1588, www.qualiridgebooks.com. —Curt Fields
