Richard Goode, piano

When: Thu., April 19, 8 p.m. 2012

Richard Goode doesn't care that April is the cruelest month. The Avery Fisher Prize-winning pianist lavishes Duke's Page Auditorium with a lush Romantic program of Schumann and Chopin. Goode is the rare combination of performer, technician and scholar who understands a composer's intent and releases that understanding at the keyboard to profound effect. The program features Chopin's final piano sonata as well as Schumann's "Hoffmannesque Kreisleriana," an eight-movement emotional rollercoaster of a composition dedicated to Chopin. As a prelude at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Goode offers a free demonstration and conversation with Duke professor Larry Todd at Durham's First Presbyterian Church. Tickets to the 8 p.m. show runs $22–$46, or just $5 for Duke students. —Chris Vitiello

Price: $22-$46, $5 Duke students
