Rhonda Riley

When: Tue., May 7, 7 p.m. 2013

Clarion, N.C., provides the setting for Rhonda Riley's historical fantasy, The Enchanted Life of Adam Hope, about a young woman who finds what she thinks is a half-dead WWII soldier in the red Carolina mud, only to watch him evolve into her double, then into a man with mysterious abilities who will become her husband. This is far better than most things I found in the Carolina mud as a kid, which included several rusted pennies and what I thought was a one-fingered glove that resulted in several long, school-counselor-advised talks with my parents. Riley's debut novel has earned comparisons to such works as The Time Traveler's Wife and The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, so get it now before it's forced on you by a score of book clubs. Riley also appears at the Regulator Bookshop on Tuesday. —Zack Smith
