Rhett Miller, Cheyenne Marie Mize

When: Thu., May 17, 8 p.m. 2012

Rhett Miller is more clever and urbane than Paul Westerberg, dropping references to Don DeLillo and cracking wise about conversations "like long division." Still, they're cut from similar cloth. If anything, Miller can be too smart, lacking Westerberg's easy, ne'er-do-well charm and sympathy. But what he lacks in emotional bite he makes up for with wonderfully crafted pop-rock that shares the same predilection toward crisp Big Star-inspired power pop as his band, the Old 97's. Don't miss opener Cheyenne Marie Mize: The onetime Will Oldham collaborator has a smoky alto that lingers over intimate cabaret and indie-folk, somewhere between the sultry grace of Norah Jones and Sharon Van Etten's haunted sway. —Chris Parker

Price: $16-19
