Retroromance: Annie Hall and When Harry Met Sally

When: Fri., May 9, 7 p.m. 2014

It's striking that two of the most popular, acclaimed, influential romantic comedies ever feature actors who aren't supermodels and who engage in long, neurotic conversations more than pratfalls. Annie Hall, pared down from a longer film called Anhedonia (the inability to feel happy, aka the driving force behind most of Woody Allen's work), won four Oscars and made Diane Keaton a fashion icon. When Harry Met Sally, celebrating its 25th anniversary this summer, is almost as light on plot. Instead, it's long on talky scenes where Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan's characters work out life and relationships. Much of the comedy comes from frank observations such as the famous "I'll have what she's having" scene. Hollywood's been trying to replicate successes like these for decades—this double feature shows how they got it right the first time. —Zack Smith
