Perhaps this is provocative, but I think The Walking Dead is so popular because there's some degree of wish fulfillment from seeing people shoot zombies in the head at close range. It creeps me out to hear people laud the show, because I go to the zombie genre for the political allegory rather than the splatter. While zombie fever is still raging, revisit one of the pillars of the genre, the 1956 Invasion of the Body Snatchers, to remember why this genre has endured. As extraterrestrial pods replace people with soulless replicas, you can think about the state legislature. But don't run screaming from the theater until you've hung around for the second half of this double feature: The 1961 Mr. Sardonicus stands at the beginning of the mad scientist genre and features an odd audience-participation segment near the end. —Chris Vitiello
