Two of the more cerebral "mainstream" horror films of the last few decades make up this Retrofantasma program. Up first is Angel Heart, the infamous New Orleans supernatural detective tale that raised hackles by featuring nudity and sex scenes with Lisa Bonet (who played Denise Huxtable on The Cosby Show). This is one of the weirdest, twistiest films around, and both Mickey Rourke and Robert De Niro go over the top, so sign us up. Next up is The Exorcist III, which some call The Magnificent Ambersons of horror movies for how the studio forced writer/director William Peter Blatty (author of the original Exorcist novel) to severely recut the film and give it, among other things, an actual exorcism. They also retitled it as a sequel to his most famous work. The hunt for the lost footage is still going on, though there have been fan edits and an upcoming book that deal with the changes. Starring George C. Scott as the police detective portrayed by Lee J. Cobb in the original film, it's a flawed but atmospheric film, and one that gets a great "jump" moment from a long steady shot. You'll know it when you see it. —Zack Smith
