Retrofantasma Classics

When: Fri., Dec. 14, 7 p.m. 2012

Two rare remakes that actually stand up to their originals highlight this month's Retrofantasma. First up is the 1982 remake of The Thing by John Carpenter, with Kurt Russell leading a crew at an Antarctic research station who learn the hard way that when testing to find out who's a shape-shifting alien in your crew, you shouldn't tie a bunch of guys to the same couch. Filled with amazingly gory special effects, the film got mixed reactions and a middling box-office take upon its initial release, but its inventive creatures and downbeat storyline have since made it an acknowledged classic. Next up is 1978's Invasion of the Body Snatches, in which Donald Sutherland finds that the "Me Decade" whims of San Francisco have made a perfect backdrop for Pod People and one very freaky dog. Both of these were remade yet again in decades to come, but let's not talk about that. Pay $8 at 7 p.m. —Zack Smith
