Retrofantasma Classic

When: Fri., March 8, 7 p.m. 2013

There have been a lot of horror movie screenings lately, but it's worth catching this Retrofantasma pair of Brit-flicks that represent two unique eras in horror history. The first is 1960's The Brides of Dracula, which helped launch Peter Cushing as one of the major stars of the Hammer horror films. Cushing had appeared with Christopher Lee in Hammer's Dracula in 1958, but with Lee unavailable for this film, the script was rewritten to focus mainly on Cushing's Van Helsing. A second Hammer film follows with The Quatermass Experiment, an adaptation of an early 1950s TV series about the first manned space flight returning to London, only ... something has infected the astronauts inside. The combination of science fiction and horror, along with the concept of ordinary people confronting an unknowable inhuman force, meant that Quatermass became an acknowledged influence on everything from Doctor Who to Kolchak The Night Stalker and The X-Files to Alien, 2001: A Space Odyssey and John Carpenter, who wrote one of his films under the name "Martin Quatermass." —Zack Smith
