RENAY AUMILLER DANCES: BLOOD MOON

CORDOBA CENTER FOR THE ARTS, DURHAM

FRIDAY, JUNE 5–SUNDAY, JUNE 7

Contemporary dance artists often seem leery of aerial work, as it calls to mind visions of the circus rather than fine art. But not Renay Aumiller, who closes Durham Independent Dance Artists' debut season with Blood Moon, which extends the dance floor into thin air by means of Andrew Munro's harnesses, ropes and pulleys. Make no mistake; this is not Cirque du Durham. It's a weightless experiment with weighty themes, inspired by both the astrological phenomenon and the astrological associations of its title, which is a term for a total lunar eclipse. By flouting gravity, the 45-minute piece also questions the intransigence of other supposedly immutable laws. An ambitious D.I.Y. production with significant costs, it was funded through a $3,000 Indiegogo campaign, a "Raising Blood Moon" preview in April and a Durham Arts Council Emerging Artist Grant. The music is by Dave Yarwood and the costumes are by Karl Green; the performers include many names familiar to DIDA supporters: Anna Barker, Amanda Beaty, Lindsay Leonard, Leah Wilks, Stacy Wolfson and Stephanie Blackmon Woodbeck. 8 p.m. Fri.–Sat.; 4 p.m. Sun., $15–$18, 923 Franklin St., Durham, 919-321-0007,
