Red State

When: Sun., Sept. 25, 7 p.m. 2011

For fans of Kevin Smith, Red State is one of his last hurrahs as a filmmaker. For all his detractors, it's time to celebrate! Smith's career as a low-brow film auteur has been a topic of derision for critics and cinephiles who consider the Jersey boy to be nothing more than a marginally talented, publicity whore, a title Smith himself has rarely disputed. Nevertheless, he's gotten fed up with all the cheap shots and lack of respect he's received over the years. So, for his second-to-last film (he's still got the two-part hockey dramedy Hit Somebody to helm), he's bypassed the usual publicity and distribution channels and has released State, a complete-change-of-pace thriller where ATF agents go toe-to-toe with sinister fundamentalists, by his damn self. The movie's been ready for viewing at various online, on-demand sites, and this Sunday, there will be a one-night-only screening in theaters across the country, followed by an interactive Q-and-A by the director. Around here, the movie will play the Galaxy Cinema at 7. Tickets are $20. —Craig D. Lindsey
