Real Estate, Twerps, Old Bricks

When: Fri., April 6, 9 p.m. 2012

Real Estate's self-titled 2009 debut was made when the band had received little attention. Its success flipped the script, and suddenly big things were expected of this New Jersey quartet. Many wondered whether the unassuming group could withstand such pressures. They did so by staying relaxed: Their 2011 follow-up Days is an ode to ease, a wistful study of "our careless lifestyle" (as singer Martin Courtney puts it in one song). The opener is even called "Easy," and throughout, Courtney guides his band through rides down tree-lined streets and strolls across leaf-filled lawns. Along the way, Real Estate finds complexity in simple things, capturing the way life's details turn profound in retrospect. And they do it with unforgettable melodies, the kind you might hum the next time you wile away a summer day. Twerps and Old Bricks open at 9 p.m. The free show is presented by Hopscotch Music Festival, which is owned by The Independent Weekly; donations will be accepted at the door for The Coalition to Protect NC Families in their fight against Amendment 1. —Marc Masters
