Re: Public art in Durham

I wanted to clarify something in Chris Vitiello's piece on public art funding ("John Wendelbo's vision of public art," July 6). He states, "Nor does the Bull City have the wherewithal or resources to develop such a policy (for art in public spaces), so public art here is a crap shoot."

While it is surprising that Chapel Hill, Raleigh, Cary, Charlotte, Asheville, Greensboro, Hickory and RDU all have percent for art or other public art programs in place and Durham does not yet, there is a nine-member Public Art Committee of the Durham Cultural Advisory Board that has been working to develop such a policy and has established a temporary process for approval of proposals for public works of art on city-owned property. Very soon we will present our recommendations to the City Council, and I encourage everyone to contact their City Council members to urge approval of this long-overdue enhancement to the cultural life of Durham.
