Rainclouds Over Wushan

When: Thu., April 15, 7 p.m. 2010

Chinese director Ming Zhang's 1995 satire of life in a town on the Yangtze River during the construction of the Three Gorges Dam took home high-profile awards at the 1996 Vancouver International Film Festival and 1997 Fribourg International Film Festival. It tells the tale of isolated bachelor Mai Qiang (Xianmin Zhang), whose encounter with widow Chen Quing (Ping Zhang) results in many complications. The film is regarded as a pre-eminent example of the sixth-generation movement in Chinese cinema. The free screening is sponsored by the Nasher Museum of Art, the Asian/ Pacific Studies Institute, the Program in the Arts of the Moving Image and the Duke University Libraries as part of the Displacement Series / Cine-East. —Zack Smith
