Purgatoire

When: Sat., April 15, 8 p.m. 2017

In recent years, Raleigh's Cirque de Vol has merged trippy costumes and body art, music, and visual projections with aerial, earthbound, and fire-dance choreography, both in company performances and in collaborations with Bare Theatre. But in its inaugural production of Purgatoire, the newcomers of Durham's Addled Muse Fire Theater promise to take audiences further into the flow—that continuum of cirque and prop-based movement involving hoops, juggling, and flame known as "flow arts." Directors Alexandra Simpson and Kelley Carey's company weaves a tale in which two lovers are tested by temptations and tried in the (sometimes literal) fires of their own desires in a kind of French Baroque purgatory. Imagine Circus and Lux Performance Studio open the evening; Fullsteam brewery and eccentric arts vendors will be in attendance. —Byron Woods
