SHELLY HEHENBERGER: PSYCHE UNVEILED

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 4, CARY

THE UMSTEAD HOTEL AND SPA—Though geological forms can seem timelessly fixed, we know they're made of volatile strata—of textures accumulating and shifting over a long time. Chapel Hill artist Shelly Hehenberger renders not just the image but also the process of landscape in mixed media on panels of wood, building up and breaking down layers of oil paint, sand, resin, chalk and wax. The pieces don't represent weathered topographies; that's what they are. From cracked deserts to networks of dry arroyos, they convey a certain immensity, a frozen tectonic violence. Complexly streaked and blistered surfaces, molten with excavated earthtones, seem to give a bird's-eye view onto monumental land art. The work can be seen the Umstead through April 30, and you can meet the artist at this complimentary wine reception. 6 p.m., free, 100 Woodland Pond Dr., Cary, 919-447-4000, www.theumstead.com. —Brian Howe
