Project 35

When: Sun., Aug. 19 2012

Despite the proliferation of onscreen outlets for video work, it remains a young and developing medium for visual artists. The yearlong Project 35 exhibition brings together video work from 35 artists, selected by 35 curators, spanning the globe. Organized by New York-based Independent Curators International, the show serves as a status report on video as a medium. Perhaps more important, it offers glimpses into cultures—and modes of cultural expression—from every corner of the planet. In pieces ranging from a couple minutes to a half-hour and with methods ranging from claymation to documentary field work, artists address subjects such as South African protests, Vietnamese youth culture and Bogotá street crime. Artists include Dan Halter (South Africa); Wanda Raimundi-Ortiz (U.S.); Zhou Xiachu (China); Kota Ezawa (Germany/ U.S.); Ranbir Kaleka (India); Tracey Moffatt (Australia); Angela Detanico and Rafael Lain (Brazil); and Vartan Avakian (Lebanon). Project 35 runs in four parts through June 2013. —Chris Vitiello
