PRISONERS—This is the story of two families torn apart after the disappearance of a couple of young girls on Thanksgiving. The suspect is a mentally challenged young man, but there isn't enough evidence for the detective on the case to arrest him. Seeing no other option, and with time running out on finding the girls alive, the two fathers kidnap the suspect and torture him for information. Denis Villeneuve (Incendies) frames the blue-collar town in a realistic light, with a police force with little budget for surveillance and husbands building bunkers in their basements. The themes of obsession and vengeance, might suggest as Seven and Zodiac as cinematic cousins, but the film surprisingly most reflects the early output of Michael Cimino. With Paul Dano, Jake Gyllenhaal, Hugh Jackman, Terrence Howard, Maria Bello, Viola Davis and Melissa Leo.
