Primus, Dead Kenny G's

When: Tue., May 31, 8 p.m. 2011

If you can't recall quirky Primus singles such as "Jerry Was a Race Car Driver" and "My Name is Mud" from the early '90s, just imagine a more adventurous, oddball version of that era's Red Hot Chili Peppers. It's been nearly two decades since those minor hits—and more than 10 years since the band's last full-length—but the eccentric alt-rockers will release Green Naugahyde this summer after reuniting to tour last fall. Longtime guitarist Larry LaLonde and original drummer Jay Lane join frontman and sole constant Les Claypool, a virtuosic bassist who, according to legend, was turned down for being "too good" after auditioning for Metallica. The Dead Kenny G's—a similarly eclectic three-piece that features members of Garage A Trois, Critters Buggin and Claypool's Frog Brigade and Fancy Band side projects—open. —Spencer Griffith
