Porch Quote

A timely reminder
"Political language ... is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind."
--George Orwell, quoted in a New York Times essay by Stanford linguist Geoffrey Nunberg marking the 100th anniversary of Orwell's birth on June 25, 1903. His point was that these days, euphemisms like "ethnic cleansing" and "voluntary regulation" aren't really Orwellian in their support of tyranny because they're so transparent. It's more subtle ones like "color blind" and "family values" we have to watch out for.
