Pinkerton Raid CD release, StephaniesID, Birds & Arrows

When: Sat., May 26, 9 p.m. 2012

A family band formed by two brothers and a sister raised by music-playing parents, Durham's The Pinkerton Raid pushes those roots forward with songs that add elements of cabaret, jazz and soul to hearthstones of American rock and country. The excellent "Piano Queen" slinks and winks like The Old Ceremony, adding pizzazz and sass to its staccato sway, while "Life of the Party" adds coed vocals and a layer of lo-fi grit to the classic bounce of early Beatles hits. The quintet celebrates its new album with Birds and Arrows, another family band of a different sort, as co-founders Andrea and Pete Connolly are married. They also take familiar structures and sounds—plaintive vocals backed by acoustics and cello—to postmodern places, twisting bits of chamber pop into the proceedings. Also on the bill is StephaniesID. Pay $5 at 9 p.m. —Grayson Currin
