Pink Flag, 8 Inch Betsy, Spooky Qs

When: Tue., May 25, 9 p.m. 2010

A slight reprise of a March show in Chapel Hill, Durham's Pink Flag and Chicago's 8 Inch Betsy—in both cases, three women chiseling a hybrid of post-punk guitars, whipsmart rhythms and crafty choruses—again share a bill. Pink Flag is more wont to snap at you, with Betsy Shane's sharp sense of humor and invective slicing through the beats and fuzz like a middle finger in a crowded room. But new 307 Knox Records signees 8 Inch Betsy hitch a sense of renegade romance to their grit, occasionally letting guitars arch like invitations. If you saw the first show, traveling openers The Spooky Qs are an incentive to see it again. The Kentucky quintet liberally applies synthesizer, violin and wonky harmonies to songs that sound like a Brooklyn warehouse circa 2001. —Grayson Currin
