Pianos Become the Teeth, The World Is A Beautiful Place And I Am No Longer Afraid To Die, Turnover, Take One Car

When: Tue., Aug. 4, 7:30 p.m. 2015

Eight years into a career that had them labeled as poster children for screamo’s new wave, Pianos Become the Teeth veered hard left. Keep You, Pianos’ first album for punk heavyweight Epitaph, finds the Baltimore quintet reconfigured as a subtle and contemplative indie rock outfit. Thick distortion has yielded to angular riffs and epic crescendos. Vocalist Kyle Durfey doesn’t scream once on Keep You. That’s a griping point for diehards but a boon to Pianos’ nuanced, textural second act. Pianos haven’t lost their technical prowess; they’ve merely learned that they don’t just have to play as fast or loud as possible to be powerful. —Patrick Wall
